Armed Services Project

This is a chance for the villages in our area to come together and do some real historical research:

Thanks to one of our members, Perce Percival, the Society is uncovering Albrighton’s military history. We can all see the names on our memorials to World War One and Two but thanks to Perce so much more is being discovered about men and women who served at different times. Indeed on our Facebook page Norma Rowland was able to write about William Jones, a soldier of the Napoleonic Wars; when she came across his grave in St Mary’s Churchyard.

This is where you come in, we would like you to let us know about any extra names and/or details for our database, which we will update regularly. We are interested in anyone with a link to Albrighton and the surrounding area who served at any time in one of the Armed Forces or in a civilian role such as an ARP or Voluntary Aid Detachment Nurse/or support role. We can also include any information of someone working in munitions during the war. It could also be in the Home Guard or in National Service or indeed more recently or in the distant past. Just follow the same outline Perce has started and give as much detail as possible.

This is a timely project to capture information and memories of the men and women in the Armed Services, and civilian support services, to see what we can uncover about past conflict of any period relating to families from Albrighton, Donington, Boningale, Tong and other local hamlets.

So if your relative was involved in the forces or wartime civilian role or you spot an interesting reference on a gravestone on your daily exercise please let us know by recording their name, rank, number, regiment, which service, address, medals, if they survived, any other information and please list your sources.

Please let us know if you have information for us by using our Contact Us page here or message us via our Facebook Group here
